Paul Livert

... seventy-nine year old resident of Oceanside, NY (Long Island) and creator of "Scraptures"... Growing up poor in Brooklyn in the 20's, from his mother he learned the value of frugality and opportunity, and the meaning of the motto, "Waste not, want not"...In 1991, he retired from a professional life in which he had played drums and bass in a vaudeville act, had led his own band, had been a record company executive, and began in earnest to infuse with life and character the worthless bowling balls his nephew had given years before and which, up 'til then, had been used as "lawn decorations"... An inveterate collector [i.e., "packrat"], the bowling balls became the foundation for the pieces and parts of discarded material culture -found objects, garage sale bargains and castoffs, and gifts from appreciative friends- that he had collected and sorted in his 8X20 garage... Indeed, Livert has a junk dealer's license which allows him to "pick" trash put out to the curb before it is hauled away by the sanitation crew... "I take things apart and save them...everything becomes inventory."...The scraptures are painstakingly constructed: screwed, bolted, soldered and pinned. He even enhances epoxy with a formula that includes the metal shavings from a hardware store's key machine... Unlike the majority of artists who work with found materials in as-found condition, Livert polishes and buffs each scrapture and seals them with three coats
of polyurethane....The spirit he expresses in each of his pieces may best be summed up by the title of this show: as he has said, "If it isn't fun, then I don't want to have it around".
