David Roth

From David Roth bio "My mother was born in Hell's Kitchen and my father just a few blocks away, both early in the century. My mother grew up in Queens, my father in the Bronx. I was born in New York City in 1940. New York City was the first city to imprint itself upon my mind and soul - the shoals of lights at night, the arching bridges, the rooftops...We moved to Massachusetts when I was in the third grade."

After high school David moved to an island off the coast of Maine where he married and had two daughters. He lobstered, cut pulpwood, fished, and collected garbage. He also wrote and sold sixty pieces of short fiction.

After his first marriage failed, he worked in the plating room of a factory in Laconia, NH. He credits his second wife, Cilla, for rescuing him from the plating room and for his personal renaissance. They worked together remodeling three houses and he began to write again, publishing six novels he characterizes as "young adult" novels. In 1992, after a medical crisis, he began to satisfy a life long desire to paint. He stated with acrylics, but in 1994 found the nuances of water-media best suited his visual ideas for imaginary landscapes, which he renders in bright watercolor, ink, and gouache. He is especially aware of the texture and surface possibilities of the media. The overall effect is an eye-opening view into beautiful, alternative worlds.
